18 Jun 2025/PSSI

PSSI, in cooperation with AMO and Lobbio, held a roundtable at the GLOBSEC Forum focused on the state of sanctions against the Russian Federation, the current intra-EU and transatlantic debate on the sanctions regime, and options to increase pressure while maintaining European and transatlantic unity on the issue.

The expert panel explored various aspects of issuing and implementing sanctions. Helga Kalm described the Estonian approach to the confiscation of sanctioned assets on behalf of Ukraine. Andrej Nosko explained the importance of Russian energy exports and how to mitigate the impact of sanctions—such as energy import bans—on smaller EU member states. Ivan Mikloš and John Lough provided insights into the economic effects of sanctions on Russia, its economy, and its war machine, as well as the limitations of sanctions in countering Russian aggression. Lukáš Kraus summarized how the Czech Republic is improving its sanctions implementation regime and outlined available options for further enhancement.
