24 Oct 2022, 17:00 – 18:00 CET

American Center (Tržiště 366, 118 00 Malá Strana, Prague)

The Prague Security Studies Institute, together with Charles University, the US Embassy in Prague, and the American Center, organized a public panel discussion concerning the private sector's role in the new global space race. How should the cooperation between the public and private sectors be organized, and what regulations and support schemes are needed for a functioning relationship between them? These and other questions were discussed.

The number of new nations deriving space-related benefits and/or building indigenous space capabilities, as well as commercial companies in various space sectors, have grown dramatically in the past several years. It has become clear that much greater involvement of industry is required in 21st-century allied and partner space activities to remain competitive globally, build a sustainable space governance model and address pressing space security issues. Panelists also looked at how the cooperation between the public and private sectors should be organized and what regulations and support schemes are needed for a functioning relationship between them.

Our distinguished speakers included:

  • Dr. Christina Giannopapa, Head of the Office of the Executive Director, European Union Agency for the Space Programme (conf.)

  • Mr. Hermann Ludwig Moeller, Director, European Space Policy Institute (ESPI) (conf.).

  • Mr. Václav Havlíček, Space Business Manager, TRL Space, and Manager, Brno Space Cluster. (conf.)

  • Mr. Kevin O’Connell, former Director of the Office of Space Commerce, US Department of Commerce, and Founder and CEO of Space Economy Rising LLC (conf.).

The panel discussion was moderated by Patrik Martínek, Project Coordinator at Prague Security Studies Institute (PSSI).
