Energy Security of the V4 Countries: How Do Energy Relations Change in Europe

21.07.2011

PSSI’s scholar, Jakub Jaroš, together with Petr Binhack from the Association of International Affairs (AMO), author a chapter on Czech energy security in a new publication by the Polish think tank The Kosciuzsko Institute

The publication is the result of a project initiated by the Kosciuszko Institute with the aim to examine and compare the energy security of the individual V4 countries. The authors – experts from Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary – offer their analysis of the problems and challenges for the national energy policies of their countries and provide recommendations. The study focuses on crude oil, natural gas and liquid fuels and presents an index measuring the energy security of the V4 countries. Additionally, the study includes an assessment of the V4 countries energy cooperation and the future prospects for shale gas exploitation in the region.

Initiated and prepared by the Kosciuszko Institute together with the V4 countries’ think tanks, the presented publication is an attempt to deliver a comparative analysis and make the first step towards periodic monitoring of the energy situation of the EU countries. The aim of this Report is to compare selected macro and micro criteria which determine the energy security of the V4 countries with regard to key primary energy sources. The report indicates that these countries experience similar energy-related problems which stem from being dependent on imports of resources from one direction and source, insufficient diversification of supplies or the need to significantly reduce CO2 emissions.
