In mind-May, PSSI convened a closed roundtable discussion on the Economic and Financial (E&F) Threat Domain, which brought together members from government agencies, diplomatic corps, as well as representatives from various academic and policy research institutes.
It was designed to be the first in a series of such gatherings aimed at illuminating how adversaries and potential adversaries are leveraging their ostensibly commercial business activities in the global markets to advance their foreign policy agenda.
In today's age, states are becoming increasingly aware of dynamics that underpin globalization. Markets, capital flows, trade, supply chains and may other economic and financial ingredients have become vital for the global economy. But they also represent components of national power, which can be employed to wield economic leverage, curry political favours and engage in a broad range of activities harmful to the national interests of the Western powers and its regional allies.
A summary of the key themes emerging from the discussions is now available.
