PSSI hosts NATO expert

23.05.2012

On May 15, PSSI organized in co-operation with the American Centre in Prague a roundtable with Mr. Stanley Sloan, Founding Director of the Atlantic Community Initiative, a Visiting Scholar at the Rohatyn Center for International Affairs at Middlebury College, and President of VIC-Vermont, a private consulting firm. With the upcoming NATO summit in Chicago, Mr. Sloan focused on NATO´s future goals, including the withdrawal of NATO forces from Afghanistan. He put an emphasis on partnership and cooperation between European members of NATO and the U.S. He stressed the importance of European allies for the U.S. and voiced his belief that Europe doesn´t pose security threats nowadays, yet doesn´t get involved enough in NATO´s security efforts. Alliances and allies are even more important in times of crises, according to Mr. Sloan, therefore the European financial crisis shouldn´t stand in a way of cooperation within NATO. Further, Mr. Sloan answered many questions concerning NATO´s future plans for missile defence in Europe, NATO-Russian cooperation, and prospects for NATO after the U.S. presidential election in November 2012.
