New Challenges in the Middle East

02.03.2011

On February 23, 2011 PSSI organized a roundtable with Dr. Shmuel Bar

PSSI had an opportunity to host Dr. Shmuel Bar, Director of Studies at the Institute of Policy and Strategy in Herzliya, Israel and one of the organizers of the annual "Herzliya Conference". Dr. Bar served for thirty years in the Israeli government, first in the IDF Intelligence and then in the Israeli Office of the Prime Minister. During this period, he specialized in Islamic fundamentalism and the Jihadi movement and served in diplomatic postings. In his speech, Dr. Bar focused on the security implications of the current turmoil in the Middle East. Specifically, he talked about the position of the Muslim Brotherhood in various countries in the region of the Middle East and how the Muslim Brotherhood may influence the future political setup in the Arab world. He also mentioned the threat of proliferation of the nuclear weapons in the Middle East. The new regimes may, according to Dr. Bar, try to strengthen their position by getting nuclear. According to Dr. Bar, the latest development in the Middle East will bring a considerable level of instability to the region and thus making it a challenge for the whole international community.
