NATO and the Greater Middle East

October 17 – 19, 2003, Prague

The conference “NATO and the Greater the Middle East,” which took place on October 17-19, 2003 in the Czech Senate, was the most important PASS event of 2003.

The conference was co-hosted by Vice-President of the Senate Jan Ruml and Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defense and Security of the Senate Josef Jařab. The conference was held under the auspices of the Czech Minister of Foreign Affairs Cyril Svoboda and the Lord Mayor of Prague Pavel Bém. Most of the 45 conference participants from abroad, including Madeleine Albright, HRH Prince Hassan bin Talal of Jordan, as well as US permanent representative to NATO R. Nicholas Burns, and the 33 participants from the Czech Republic, including Václav Havel, agreed that the conference has brought numerous interesting insights to bear on a multidimensional topic. The conference discourse has helped us to better understand the highly complex issues of the Greater Middle East and the potential role of NATO in contributing to the resolution of the problems of the region.
